I once stumbled on an article from the New York Times about Quebec upholding the ban of religious symbols in public. Their law, adopted in June 2019, meant that Muslim headscarves, Jewish skullcaps, Sikh turbans, and Catholic crosses could not be worn by public officials.

This news profoundly affected me, as I could only feel sorry for people of faith, particularly my very own Catholic brothers and sisters in Quebec. I also thought about Christians in the Middle East and other 'closed countries' where wearing crosses or other religious symbols were forbidden.

I myself am a public employee, and never have I left home without a scapular around my neck or a rosary in my pocket. These are sources of hope, security and faith that I draw upon daily, especially while working. Having sacramentals always helps me feel protected by the Lord and the Blessed Mother, and this was especially the case when COVID-19 spread like wildfire. They reminded me to pray and call upon Heavenly powers every day.

The news about Quebec never left my head. I prayed that God would use me to help all Christians who wanted to hold onto something to remind them of their faith.

And one day, my prayer was answered. The small, still voice for God told me to make a watch. That struck me as a little odd at first, as I'm no avid watch collector. But I’ve always appreciated classic quality watches, so God’s message to me has been my inspiration ever since.

Watches are generally considered an accessory and, for some, a day-to-day essential. People wear them for different reasons. They’re a perfect reminder of time, but they can also be a perfect reminder of faith.

Hence, JMJ Hildebrand was born. And shortly thereafter, so was our first series: DEUS NOBISCUM. That translates from the Latin as 'God is with Us', and speaks for itself and for the wearer.

It will be a great joy in my heart for these beautiful timepieces to be worn in the name of our faith! And if I can help anyone cleave to this faith — especially anyone in areas where religious expression is suppressed — I know I’ll have done my job.

As a thanksgiving to the Holy Family and to help propagate our Catholic faith, part of the proceeds will go toward sponsoring seminarians in need and paying for the medical care of retired priests and nuns in developing countries. Hopefully, in the future, we can build a Chapel/Church in honour of the Holy Family. That's JMJ Hildebrand's overarching dream.
